AFRIBANK received its banking licence on October 20, 1959, and opened its first branch in the city of Kano on January 4, 1960. It was then known as Banque International Pour L'Afrique Occidenate (BIAO). The Bank's Headquarters was setup in 1960 at 94 Broad Street, Lagos. The head office was relocated to its present location, 51/55 Broad street in 1998 following the completion of the Afribank Plaza. Two more branches were set up in Port Harcourt and Aba just before the outbreak of the Civil War in 1967. On May 30, 1969, BIAO was incorporated in the country as a limited liability company under International Bank for West Africa (IBWA) the English equivalent of BIAO. Following 2004-2005 banking reforms announced in July 2004 by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Bank in October 2004 went to the capital market to raise N 17Billion. This successful offer brought Afribank's Shareholders' Funds to N25 Billion. Subsequent investments in the Bank by institutional investors and the recapitalization of the year 2005 profits increased the Bank's Shareholders Funds to N30 Billion. |
